Biotech raised nearly $45 billion in 2007, but more than $22 billion – a record-setting amount – came from partnering deals. U.S. biotech companies raised nearly $14.6 billion alone in the second half of 2007 through partnering as Big Pharma continued its relentless drive to fill its pipeline with innovations from biotech companies. The robust activity largely offset a $6.2 billion drop in debt financings for the sector last year to $6.7 billion. The amount raised from IPOs totaled $2 billion, double the $920 million raised in 2006. The average amount raised per IPO was also considerably higher - $73 million versus $50 million in 2006.
