The Class of 2007

The industry raised $2 billion, but more than half of the issues finished below water by the end of the year.

Last year turned out to be a pretty good one for biotechnology companies looking to go public, at least when it comes to raising money. The class of 2007 raised a total of $2 billion, more than double the $920 million raised in 2006. The average deal size in 2007 grew to $73 million, considerably more than the $50 million average seen the previous year. But performance was another issue. While there were standouts such as WuXi PharmaTech, which by year end more than doubled, overall 60 percent of this slate of new issues was trading below their initial offering price by year end.
