The Money Drug

Hillary Clinton leads the pack of 2008 presidential candidates in contributions from pharma.

The presidential race is off to a brisk start. The 2008 candidates have already raised more than $150 million in just three months, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Some say that each party's winner will need to raise $500 million to compete in the general election. So far, Senator Hillary Clinton (D-New York) is leading the Democratic pack with $36 million raised and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney is leading the Republicans with $23.4 million.

*Based on Federal Election Commission data for the 2008 cycle released on April 15, 2007. Totals are calculated from PAC contributions and contributions from individuals giving more than $200, as reported to the Federal Election Commission. Individual contributions are generally categorized based on the donor’s employer, although individuals may be classified instead as ideological donors if they have given more than $200 to an ideological PAC.
